The Story Behind the Kizyma Electric Identity
The Kizyma Electric corporate identity was created by renowned American artist and designer Mario Armond Zamparelli (1921–2012), one of the most influential corporate identity designers of his era.
For nearly two decades, Mario served as Chief Executive Designer for Howard Hughes' business empire, creating identities and visual programs for organizations including TWA, Hughes Airwest, Hughes Helicopters, the Howard Hughes Medical Institute, and numerous Hughes-owned companies and properties. His work also extended to major American brands and institutions including Disney, Capitol Records, Universal Pictures, Datsun, Mattel, Southern California Gas Company, Union Bank, Kimberly-Clark, and many others. He was also entrusted by Howard Hughes to create the only portrait Hughes ever commissioned of himself.
The opportunity to work with Mario originated through a longstanding friendship between the Kizyma and Zamparelli families. Although initially hesitant to accept a commission from an electrical contractor—a field he had never previously designed for—Mario ultimately embraced the challenge and approached the project with the same creativity and professionalism that characterized his distinguished career.
As part of the design process, Mario developed approximately forty logo concepts for Kizyma Electric, each exploring a different interpretation of the company's name, trade, and identity. After reviewing the concepts, Adrian Kizyma selected one design. Unknown to him at the time, it was the same concept independently preferred by both Mario and his daughter, Gina.
That design became the official identity of Kizyma Electric.
More than four decades later, the logo remains unchanged.
The mark continues to represent the values upon which Kizyma Electric was founded—innovation, craftsmanship, reliability, and technical excellence. Today, as Kizyma Electric serves hospitals, aerospace facilities, broadcast networks, educational institutions, commercial developments, and other mission-critical environments throughout Southern California, the company's identity remains a lasting connection to one of America's most accomplished designers and an extraordinary chapter in American design history.
